Mistakes make you smarter & stronger

So you’ve made a wrong decision? Taken a wrong course? Don’t despair!

Turn it into an opportunity to be stronger and smarter.

How can you learn from mistakes? Here are some tips:

Be honest and own it
The best way to start and turn a mistake into a positive experience is to admit it and take responsibility. It takes courage but it will make you more resilient. It is unlikely you will make the same mistake again.

Reflect on what went wrong
Think about what you could do differently next time. Discuss it with your mentor or ask someone you can trust for their input.

Look at the glass as half full
Think about mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow as a person. You learn more from your mistakes than from your successes.

Find solutions
Consider how to fix a problem with a possible solution. This minimises the negativity surrounding the issue. Think it through rationally and objectively.

Stay calm
Staying calm and composed will avoid making impulsive decisions to try and remedy the situation. Letting stress and fear control and guide will only make matters worse.

Keep things in perspective
Mistakes we make early in our career often seem catastrophic at the time but later we can look back on them with appreciation.

Move on when the time is right.
Once you have acknowledged and accepted the consequences, it’s time to move on. It is important that your self-confidence and judgement remain positive.
