Tips for the first 90 days

So you’ve finally landed a job in a company where you see yourself growing for many years! You’re nervous. You don’t know what to expect. You are unsure how to act in this new environment. And you have three months to prove yourself.

Here are some tips that will help:

  1. Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut.
It’s natural to want to show your employers everything you know. Don’t. This is the learning phase so keep your lips sealed.

  2. Take note of everyone you meet.
When you are introduced to a new colleague, form your opinion of him or her, but keep it to yourself.

  3. Understand the hierarchy.
Get to know the formal and informal structure in a business. Most offices have a resident gossip, a high-achiever and a corporate climber. Watch how they work and who they know.

  4. Keep the mystery.
Don’t tell colleagues everything about yourself or your private life. Don’t over-connect. This is the time to learn about your colleagues, not the other way round.

  5. Set goals for yourself.
Pick three things you want to achieve in the first 90 days. Track your success – your wins and losses.

  6. Don’t try to over-impress.
Keep to what you are asked to do and do it well.

  7. Keep an ace up your sleeve.
If you have a skill or talent that could add value to the company, don’t release it until you find the right time and place.
